Coughing leading to vomiting

My son who is now 13 months has a history of reflux and projectile vomiting. All the way through breast feeding he would always sick up a mouthful or two. after moving on to solids and when he spent more time sitting up, the problem eased off. Unfortunately, after 9 months he started projectile vomiting, once or twice a week. He was always quite happy and definitely didn't have a bug as there were no other symptoms. We went to see our GP and were refereed to a consultant who gave us some meds that seemed to put an end to it. Three weeks ago he picked up a nasty bug, vomiting, diarrhoea etc. and soon got over it. Since then he has picked up a hacking cough. He sometimes coughs so much he ends up bring up all his last meal. We've been in and out of the surgery without getting any answers. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? We're at our wits end to know what to do.

Thanks,

Edward

Hi Edward

My son who is now 3 went through a stage of this when younger and still does it occassionally. It did used to worry me but in the end there wasn't much to be done - you just have to try and alleviate the cough. Try maybe linctus, propping up his pillow - others have suggested steamy rooms. It will pass, but its worrying and distressing - I know. As long as he is keeping fluids down & some solids, he should be fine. Sorry not to be of much more use - but just wanted to reassure you that it is quite common.

dd would also do the same - she had mild reflux too and it seemed for a while as if she could throw up at the least provocation. It did get better with time and she has n't done it since about 18 months. (remember a bumpy car train ride had the same effect )

DS2 (19 months) has had a hacking cough and did this last night without us even hearing him. Felt terrible this morning when went into his room and he was in a cot full of dried vomit (Not much - just a bit)
Can't understand why we didn't hear him - he can't have cried out much - he's in the next room and we had the monitor on...

Still feel terrible though.

Meanwhile he is absolutely fine!

Thanks for the feedback - it's good to know we're not alone!

He's always so chirpy and drinks loads of fluids, so at least he's not in distress or getting dehydrated.
