He seems to have cricked his neck this morning - he says its agony and to be honest I looked at it this evening and the muscle on the back right hand side of his neck is swollen. He's had a warm wheaty bag on it for most of the day at the doctors suggestion. He wont take calpol or nurofen though. Any suggestions for other things he could use to ease the pain? he's gone to bed feeling very fragile and sore

If it's still the same tommorrow suggest a hot bath, a hairdryer aimed at the sore spot is supposed to help too. Are you sure it's just a crick and not a sprained/pulled muscle? If it's still swollen and sore tommorrow i'd take him back to the doctor.

If you can afford it, get seen by an osteopath
I suffered with crick necks a lot due to recurring shoulder injury and my osteo has become my salvation.
Alternating hot and cold can help as well as it contracts and expands the muscle therefore keeping it supple.
Bless him, it is truly agonising
