Weird little muscle over my hip bone

What is it? How do I stretch it or fix it? It's been bugging me. It's not my gluteus minimus, that stretch where you lie on the floor, and put your right foot on the left side of your left knee, and then hug your right knee, to stretch the right side, doesn't do the job.

I suspect this is because of running, or because of pilates.

Not clear as to where the problem area is. Is it over the hip bone at the front which could be where the obliques wrap from the hip area to the abs?

If it is then there are two stretches that can help you but warm up a little first.

  1. lay on back, bring knees to chest and hold your shins (or wrap arms around shins) bringing them in tight. Roll gently from side to side in rocking movement.

  2. Stand up straight both knees slightly bent, now put right leg behind you as far as comfortable, keeping your balance with your toes (so heel should be off the ground)now drop the right knee slightly (not to the ground), letting your right hip drop with it, hold for as long as comfy and repeat with left foot.

Remember should only stretch when warm.

Oh, sorry, didn't see your answer. No, it's behind my hip bone, over towards the hip. Lying on the other side stretches it a bit. (Maybe it's not a muscle, but a tendon etc?)

Notquitecockney, This maybe a long shot and I dont really want to alarm you but there isnt the slightest chance you might be pregnant?

I was thinking fallopians are in hip region and whilst lying in bed I had an awful thought of an ectopic pregnancy.

NotQuiteCockney · 19/08/2006 15:33

Whoops, sorry, hadn't seen this. No absolutely not pregnant. Don't worry. Worth pointing out the concern, but it's def not pregnancy. (And it's outside the hipbone, would an ectopic hurt there? I thought ovaries and tubes were inside the hips?)

I am going to see a physio when back from holidays, as my left knee is cranky, I've had twinges of planar fascitis (sp?) and this hip thing, so I will find out wtf is going on.

NQC - ask your physio, if it's only just started hurting it might be a side effect from compensating for your hurt foot - go easy on the running!
