Blinding, thumping headache, pain killers no good, any ideas?

I don't usually bother complaining about headaches (I get them a lot), but this is a fucking nightmare. I can't see straight and I can't just go to sleep because it's throbbing too hard. I've taken ibuprofen, and paracetamol/codeine, and tried massaging pressure points/deep breathing etc, and it's just getting worse. Does anyone have any handy headache remedies? I'll try anything once

where is it? I mean is it a migraine, one sided, or is at the front (sinuses) or at the back (stiff neck)

many sympathies, getting loads at the moment (think it's the weather + hay fever) and can't take anything as pregnant

You have my sympathy! I've got incredibly painful sinusitis atm, I've had to get a course of antibiotics is the pain at the front of your head?

Greensleeves · 12/08/2006 20:15

I usually get tension headaches or sinus headaches, but this one feels like a combination of everything, the pain is from my shoulders all the way to my eyes/face, it's a real bastard

Am drinking water in the vain hope that it will help.

keep up with the water. Glasses & glasses of it. I always find it helps. Have you tried sniffing lavender oil? A cold wet flannel on your forehead?

Tigerbalm! Works a treat for me. You have my sympathy though - I suffer with headaches quite often.

Greensleeves · 12/08/2006 20:32

Haven't tried the lavender, will do so. Thanks

Sometimes I get a trapped nerve in my shoulders which gives me a bad headache. Gentle massage helps me.

noddyholder · 12/08/2006 20:33

Me too!Blew my nose really hard last night as I have sinusitis and now have an unbelievable one sided headache.I even tried nurofen which I am not supposed to take and it didn't work!Sometimes eating carbs helps me its worth a try

CorrieDale · 12/08/2006 20:33

Warm flannels on the back of your neck? Turn off the lights and the PC? Running out of inspiration now...

MrsJohnCusack · 12/08/2006 20:33

oh man
I know that feeling, and it's so so grim if you can't get to sleep

water yes if you can keep it down, lots
sometimes something really sugary like coke or lucozade helps (wouldn't drink either normally but sometimes they're good)

yesterday couldn't rest my head properly because it hurt too much but managed to get off to sleep with no pillows and a rolled up towel under my neck so it wasn't getting strained. (curled up on my bed cuddling my cat)

sometimes a bath helps but not always. or even a shower?

sympathies though. sometimes you just have to hang on until finally you conk out. Horrible

MrsJohnCusack · 12/08/2006 20:34

oooh yes and lavender drops in the bath

Greensleeves · 12/08/2006 20:40

Thanks so much for all the ideas, I didn't expect much response really! I will try everything suggested and then just go to bed I think.
