I'm not sure what's up as it comes and goes without much of a pattern. I thought it had gone completely, but it has just returned with a vengeance during my period.

Not thrush - there is no discharge and yeasty smell, but the whole area swells up and gets raw, to the point of the skin cracking and bleeding a bit. If there is a smell, it's possibly a bit sharper than usual. I think it started before Xmas mid-cycle during a spell of heavy mid-cycle watery discharge. Then went away, and started the next month at about the same time, so I put it down to that time of the month. But as I said, I got it halfway through my period this month and I use a moon cup so no sogginess to set it off. What can it be? I don't want antibiotics which I assume a gp would suggest, just wondered if anyone has had anything similar?

Have you got a handy GUM clinic nearby? As you think your GP is incompetent and will just fob off with ABs, then going to specialists straight away would be better (and perhaps have a think about changing GP to one you have confidence in).

Sounds like vulvo-vaginitis which is really common. Google it- see if the symptoms seem to fit

Not allergic to your mooncup are you??

mmmm, could be (to your google suggestion). Might try some tea tree oil sitz to see if it helps, but it is on the mend itself just now. I am wondering about the on/off nature of it. The allergy did occur to me and I so hope it isn't - I'm pretty sure in other months it's got better during my period rather than worse like this time. I'm thinking hormones or a deficiency or food sensitivity or something like that
