We were away for the last week of term and when we got home, dd started to play with her friend, her friend stayed over and they played in the paddling pool together etc. Anyway, about 2 days after we came home, dd's friends mum came to inform me her dd had a head full of lice I checked dd and she was ok, a few days later, dd's friend was still scratching and still had an infested head (even though her mum was wetcombing etc everyday). Anyway, i found 1 live nit and about 3 eggs in her hair so i treated her and me with the nit lotion stuff (forget the name derma something) and continued to wetcomb her hair, i didnt find anything else. We then went away for another week and i checked her hair every few days and found nothing, nor in mine. Anyway, we have been back a week and i have just found about 5 lice in her hair, some dead some alive and a few eggs. There are no more in there but i have treated us both anyway. I have loads of questions.
How long do eggs stay in before they hatch?
Does the lotion kill the eggs aswell?
If i only found 5 live lice and a few eggs does this mean that the one live one i found about 2 weeks ago lay eggs and these are the adult ones hatched? If that is the case then the lotion clearly does not kill the eggs.
What about the live ones i found? If these have laid eggs, then they will also hatch, the eggs are sooo hard to see.
Advice purleeease! My dd has excema and its really hard for her to stay still as im trying to de-nit (!) as she gets so itchy.
Help - i dont know anything about this really!

For info on the dreaded nit look here

I've not tried it but a friend recommended neem oil to get rid of the little pests.

HTH

Thanks, the ones i pulled off this morning were quite clear in colour which suggests that they are newly hatched lice. If this is the case then the lotion definately doesnt kill the eggs asit was about 2 weeks ago that i found the really dark adult one, which had obviously laid eggs. Hopefully then, if i have the live ones out which are quite young, they wont have laid eggs.

We are going through the same thing and are at the same stage exactly. am waiting to see what i find when i comb tonight!

lots of info on the web about life cycle etc - just google head lice. and no, it looks as if the lotion doesn't kill all the eggs but wet combing will ( I hope!) get them all out in the end!

Nixz · 11/08/2006 13:49

i find that the comb doesnt get the eggs out tho - i have to pick themout with my fingers, so will probably be missing ome iyswim.

Apparently lice are becoming resistant to a lot of chemical treatments, so try using Tea Tree Oil instead, with the comb. My SIL uses it diluted in a spray bottle. Probably smells better than the chemicals anyway!

try wet combing with baby oil - it really gets them out - they have nothing to hold on to.

Good luck

Hedrin was the only thing that got rid of mine
Tried all sorts of chemicals.
Hedrin is nonchemical and coats the lice then you comb them out. Works a treat

Nixz · 11/08/2006 14:58

just googled it - wow - where do i get one from!

Hi,

If you go on to the nittygritty website you can print off a letter to take to your GP and you can get the comb free on prescription. Otherwise you can order it on the same website , it's around £11 I think.
