DVLA Fitness to Drive

Hi,

I have not posted much before although I regularly lurk.

I was just wondering if anyone had come across this situation before.

I have severe asthma and have recently been awarded a blue badge due to persistent debilitating breathlessness.

However, at the same time that I received this letter. I received a separate letter from the DVLA stating that they had received a notification from a third party regarding my driving and were enquiring regarding my fitness to drive.

I just wondered if anyone else had had this, or knew whether the two are linked in anyway? I can't think what else could have triggered the DVLA writing to me and am a bit worried about it.

Asthma is not a notifiable condition as such and I have no other health problems so I am worried I'm going to get in trouble for not doing anything wrong!

The DVLA guidelines are here - www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/275982/aagv1.pdf and on page 54 it says regarding asthma "DVLA need not be notified unless attacks are associated with disabling giddiness, fainting or loss of consciousness"

If you have no other medical conditions I'd reply to the letter stating your only medical problem is asthma, but that it is not associated with disabling giddiness, fainting or loss of consciousness so you did not believe they needed to be informed. (as long of course as your asthma isn't associated with any of these things!)

If its worrying you you could always go and discuss with your GP, and possibly ask them to call DVLA to clarify on your behalf.
