conjunctivitis - fusidic acid eye drops

Hi,

DD had conjuctivitis last week and the Dr prescribed her fusidic acid eye drops.

Her conjunctivitis has now gone away but she has given it to me because she likes poking my eyes with her snotty little fingers. I think you can buy the same eye drops over the counter so I am tempted just to use hers on myself. The only thing stopping me is that the leaflet says not to use while breastfeeding. I am breastfeeding DD but surely it's OK if the Dr has given her the same eye drops, right?

I really wouldn't share eye medication. You can buy the drops over the counter but I would hazard a guess that the strength would be weaker than prescription stuff and plus you may need a different strength to a child.

Current NHS advice is that you don't necessarily need to treat conjunctivitis so, especially as you are breast-feeding, I would just keep clean with cooled boiled water for a few days and see if it clears up on its own first.

i think I will give it a go. I've had it a week and it's not going away on its own, I've been cleaning them with salt water which has now given me eczema on my eyelids.

gamer I normally wouldn't share eye medication but I'm the only one who has given her the drops and I haven't touched her eyes with the dropper.

keep an eye on the shelf life. It's not very long for eye medication.

I hope it works.. I had to use this gloop cream stuff that turned into liquid.. that was fun!

The packet says to dispose of it within one month, it's only been open for just over a week.

Fusithlmic eye drops are prescription only. You can buy chloramphenicol otc however.

well I just gave myself a dose...eyes feel less itchy already (could be psychological though!)
