Right ovary missing!

Today I had a transvaginal scan as I have been having irregular bleeding even though i'm on the pill. There were no fibroids etc and womb lining looked ok but she could not locate my right ovary at all. I have a history of endo and do get pains on that side so I wondered if it might be to do with that? Surely ovaries don't just dissappear? My left ovary is perfect . Does anyone have any ideas and what if my hidden ovary has something wrong with it but can't be seen?
I'm going back to docs next week when they receive the report but any ideas in the mean time please?

Did you always have two?

sydlexic · 18/02/2014 20:55

That happened to my DD. It was found later, higher up than the other. I would have been surprised if it wasn't as she had 3 DC in 3 years.

I had this! my other one turned at a scan at the proper gynaecological dpt rather than at local hospital.
I have heard though of floating ovaries. which can almost become detached.
not much help but its v v rare to only have one (so I was told)

Thank you for your replies. I definitely had 2 to start with as I have had scans before. It's all a bit. Weird. I have a follow up appointment next Monday so will see what gp says. Eww to floating ovaries. Shock

I had this - the same thing, a transvaginal ultrasound the other day. The nurse couldn't see my right ovary either. She was entirely unconcerned, and said that it's often hidden by the gut. She kneaded my stomach a bit but said that this happened a lot.

I had my results a few days ago, and my scan was fine. No need to rescan or anything, because she said if it was swollen, they'd definitely be able to see it.

Ah thanks fluffy and glad your scan was ok. still don't know whats causing my bleeding but it's reassuring to know there was nothing obvious.

I had random bleeding too, that's why I had the scan.

No fibroids, womb lining was good, ovaries look fine.

The bleeding has randomly stopped. Fingers crossed, it's gone for good.

I've got a gynae appointment at the local specialist hospital anyway, to make sure, but I'm not worried. The nurse was really experienced and confident.

I hope your appt goes okay :)

I'm glad yours has stopped but I guess it sounds like they have been thorough. will update next week for anyone who might be interested. someone told me if your thyroid is out, it can cause this sort of problem ad well.
