Tooth extraction after abscess - normal pain?

I had a tooth out on Wednesday after having an abscess since November that isn't respond to any antibiotics at all ( tried 4 different types ) had root canal treatment 3 times and it only reduced slightly so finally had to admit defeat and have it out.
Now as I had it done under sedation I'm not sure exactly how well it went but I'm in a lot of pain still and have never had a tooth out before to compare it to.
The gum now has a white / yellow mark on and the hole looks covered on one side and white on the other.
An panicking about dry socket as unsure why only one side looks covered at the moment and on Thursday I ate some rice and thinking some had got stuck in my hole gently brushed the surface only to realise it wasn't rice so am now worried I removed part of the clot :(
The pain is not over where the tooth was, just in the gum area which is still as swollen as it was Wednesday although where the rock hard abscess was is now softer.
No idea what kind of pain I should be in, but paracetamol / ibrufen isn't really touching it.

Can you phone and get seen somewhere? I was able to call my own dentist who saw me first thing Sunday morning and dealt with the issue and gave me an antibiotic prescription there and then.

I've been on every type of antibiotic for the last 2 monts trying to get rid of the abscess prior to the root canal ( which failed ) and then the extraction.
Nothing touched it at all, was a massive hard lump which is still there although feels soft now and very tender.
My dentist isn't open until tomorrow so will have to go in and let them have a look just have no idea what's " normal " and what isn't.
An worrying that it's spread although I have no temperature

Have you been doing warm salt water mouth rinses?

Sounds like an infection I'm afraid. I had a tooth out last year and got an infection in it. The pain was worse than child birth. Get it seen u may need antibiotics.

The infection is from the abscess right?
If antibiotics haven't worked for the last 2 months what on earth can they do now??
Not a smoker and have been doing the mouthwash of salty water every few hours :(
Have googled the dry socket thing and looks like a possibility as one side looks healed and the other side looked white if that makes sense
No idea how to contact out of hours dentist will do some more digging
This is never ending the pain is horrendous

Once the tooth is out the abscess can drain. Pain from abscesses is due to the pressure of the pus building up with nowhere for it to go.

If you don't smoke and have been looking after the area then dry socket is less likely to occur, but still a possibility

I haven't noticed any " draining "

There is a yellow mark on the gum, is this normal?
Out of hours can't see me, so will have to wait until tomorrow

No you shouldn't still be noticing any draining of pus. It could well be a dry socket in spite of you doing all the correct aftercare

can you get an OOH appt for decent painkillers at least? I had a wisdom tooth out 10 days ago and was on prescription cocodamol for several days - no way would paracetamol or ibuprofen or indeed over the counter cocodamol have cut it those first few days.

not even with GP? tbh I'd be at A+E with the pain I was in last weekend, it was excruciating! lucky I had some painkillers at home though!

I read on a thread on here once (but can't find it sorry) that a mnetter would have her husband put a drop of clove oil on the site. I recall she said it hurt at first, but then provided relief. You need to get back to your dentists tomorrow where they will clean and pack the socket with smelly gauze - I think the smell is from clove oil but I could be wrong.

Am on route to boots in hope I find a gauze and will Try the clove oil until I get hold on my dentist tomorrow

Ended up in a&e last night
The pain was getting too bad for me to even stand up straight and I came out in a rash all over.
Rash went whilst I was there although I bloody panicked and thought septicaemia?!
Was given 500mg co codamol and that got me through the night although didn't get home til 3am and kids up at 630 so not much sleep.
Pain is back even with another 2 tablets and my head is pounding too now, doctor said to go back to the dentist and didn't think I needed antibiotics as it hadn't responded to them before?
Have done the wrong thing completely and googled it all and had no idea this could spread to the brain!
Hopefully id know if it had but I'm in so much pain I don't know if I'd notice!

Yes I did thanks and am now on antibiotics and he put a solution into the dry socket I have

Clove oil will burn your gum, so not the best for dry sockets

Just in case someone has problems at the moment....I had back lower tooth out as it had broken off and had absess.I had to have 6 injections that really hurt.
After two days it is still hurting and the socket is white.I am eating and drinking ok though.I ache all down the side of my face and jaw,paracetamol isn't really helping.I am rinsing with warm salt water as I hope not to get an infection.I suppose the injections alone would bruise my gums.Hope it settles soon.
