DS spent a night in hospital with stomach bug

DS2 (22 months) got worse over the weekend with his diarrhoea & vomiting. He refused all liquid except breast and even when I syringed water into his mouth, spat it out. GP was worried about dehydration, so admitted him last night. They were going to put him on a drip but decided he could escape that by the skin of his teeth because breast milk kept him just hydrated enough. Glad I continued feeding!

We are home now, but still have a very floppy boy who can't keep much in him. Have to keep an eye on him for a few days.

(Didn't get much sleep in the parent bed they gave me!)

They gave me a fact sheet. It's rather confusing though, as many of the 'signs' are things he already had as they discharged him. Have got direct line to ward though.

No, they didn't do a blood test.
The tears and tummy skin are ok. Our main concern was that he'd stopped weeing, but started again today, thank goodness.

Oh sorry to hear that Droile. Our ds has the same thing at the mo. I thought he was getting better today, but he was sick again this afternoon and has now got diarrhoea too. Am quite worried about dehydration, as when i changed him for bed, his nappy was bone dry (it had been on for about 4 hours). He has been crying for most of the day, but i simply cannot remember if there were tears or not. I have been checking on him every 30 minutes since he went to bed.
Hope your ds gets better soon Droile.

That must have been really scary Droile- hope he's on the mend now. Nutcracker, I had dd being sick just twice last week but obviously unwell - took since Tuesday until today to get really wet nappies again and only really ate properly today. Hope your ds recovers soon too.

Oh Droile, how dreadful for you all. I've never ended up in hospital with either of my two, and cannot imagine how scary it must be.

Hope you both have a better night tonight, and you can start getting other fluids into him soon.

Hope he starts bouncing back really soon for you ... I'm sure you don't need telling to take it very easy, VERY slowly on reintroducing foods even when he's very well in himself.

Clarinet60 · 08/03/2004 14:08

Thanks everyone, he's been up and down today. Still diarrohea, but at least he's drinking now.

Hope you get wet nappies soon, Nutcracker. Is he drinking at all?

Hi Drolie, he's lots better today. We even risked giving him his milk this morning. He has had a wet nappy now, not very wet, but enough to stop me panicking. He hasn't eaten much but i'm not bothered about that. He has just had a bit of apple, and a bit of toast.
Hope you ds feels better soon.

ScummyMummy · 08/03/2004 17:02

Really hope he feels better soon, Droile and that you're not still frantic with worry. It is so scarey how quickly they can dehydrate. One of mine ended up with a nosetube overnight in hospital at 18months after a very similar illness so I utterly sympathise.

ScummyMummy · 08/03/2004 17:03

So glad your bub is on the mend too, nutcracker.

These stomach bugs seem to be really bad, don't they? I keep reading posts by people whose little ones have them. I hope he's better soon Droile.

nutcracker · 08/03/2004 22:36

Scummymummy - I spoke to quickly, he was very sick again tonight I am taking him to g.p tommorow, as i'm concerned at how long it's gone on for.

Marina · 09/03/2004 09:31

There really are some horrible D & V bugs doing the rounds at the moment. Nutty, Droile, I hope your little ones get properly better soon. What a worry for you both.
