Heavy painful period - could this be an early miscarriage?

Have been trying to conceive with no luck for 14 months and already have a dd of 2 and a half. My periods are always bang on 28 days and last about 4-5 days. First 2 days are moderate (Lilets Super will usually do the trick) then 2-3 days of lighter bleeding.
This month I used an ovulation predictor kit so I know we had sex at the right time. I came on at exactly the predicted time, late Friday night but have been feeling very down and hormonal - it feels more like PMT than start of period (see my pathetic sorry-for-myself posting on the ttc 4 thread if you don't beleive me!). The bleeding's been very heavy (Super Plus Extra have been necessary) and painful and - sorry to be so graphic - I've just had to change my tampon again after only 1 and a half hours and I'm passing clots. I know this isn't unusual for some people but it is for me, especially on the 2nd day. I purposely didn't want to do an early pg test this month because I'm fed up of raising my hopes but I wonder if maybe everything got under way for a pg then it turned into a period instead?
Anyone any experience of this? I know there's nothing anyone can do but it actually makes me a bit more hopeful that we can conceive even if it didn't work out this time.

hi Moomin. It sounds like it could be a very early miscarriage - many women have them and dont realise they are miscarrying, they just assume a heavy period. I suppose those of us who are ttc are much more aware of everthing to do with our cycles. You could try a pg test - there may be hormones left in your system to confirm you were, briefly, pregnant.
