have had shits for nearly a month - help!

I have had the shits for nearly a month now and the doc called today to say that the lab had not found anything in my poo. She said that it is likely I had had a virus that has left me intolerant to wheat and dairy.

So I am to stay off it until I get better. Has anyone else had anything like this? Can you suggest anything I should be taking to help my stomach?

I know probiotics are good but is there anything else?

Have lost loads of weight which is great seeing as I did not shift it after ds2 but now a bit worried about what is going on inside me.

Before you ask I cannot ask my GP, she is the most unhelpful cow I have ever met and would probably tell me to take some calpol(!).

had ot go to see doctor to tell him i had "unnatural poo"

foxinsocks · 01/08/2006 14:40

how helpful of your doctor!

it's important that you don't let wheat or dairy in your diet at all while you try it out (how your doctor knows it is both is beyond me but I guess it's likely to be one of them and possibly both!)

best thing to do is totally cut them out for a week - make a real effort to read labels to make sure you are - and see how you feel. If you notice a difference then great - carry on doing it for a couple more weeks. If you don't, then I would think about going to a different GP!

YellowFeathers · 01/08/2006 14:41

pmsl!
you actually said that?

Well, I gogt some antibiotics from the GP and they cleared it up totally for a few days but it has now just come back again.
I am so pissed off as am starting work tomorrow and feel like shit.
got worse cramps and terrible diarrhea.
going to doctor's today again but am worried it is sommething awful las it has been going on for ages. If antibiotics worked, does thhat mean that it was a bacterial infection? anyone know?

TambaTheDragonSlayer · 16/08/2006 10:15

How long ago did you finsih the anti-bs? If it was a day or two before your stomach got bad again it could just be a side affect from them as they distroy the good bactieria in your gut (or something) have you tried taking pro-biotics? I would give it a couple of days and go back to the doctors. Are you still cutting the wheat out from your diet? Have you re-introduced anything back to your diet lately?

CountessDracula · 16/08/2006 10:16

Have they asked about a family history of Crohn's or Ulcerative Colitis?

maazaa · 16/08/2006 10:41

These type of symptoms happened to my father, cause unknown (either virus or new anti-inflammatory drugs for other condition). He had terribe cramps and the runs for months. He had a lovely GP who looked at all kinds of things. It was decided he had severe IBS with intolerance to dairy, with cheese being particularly bad. He did this and cut down on wheat, sugar (which can cause a riot) and ate plain sensible foods. Alcohol doesn't help. It was the most boring, frustrating time, but better than the world falling out of your bottom every five minutes!!!

It's much better now and he's slowly reintroduced alcohol, even cheese.

He was prescribed Mubevrin (sounds like that, not sure on spelling) which really helped. he's now off that. He also swears by the pro-biotics as they have put back what was wiped out in the intestines, causing everything to speed through.

Poor you!

Bugsy2 · 16/08/2006 10:42

i had gastro enteritus over Easter and had severe cramps & the most awful runs for over 3 weeks.
I cut back my food to boiled rice, rich tea & gallons of ribena. The cramps were so severe that I took Buscopan (IBS over the counter drugs) to help.
It did eventually go, but I found that if I tried to re-introduce normal food to quickly I would be back on the loo pronto!
On the up side I lost 12lbs, which I haven't put back on again. [simle]

Piffle · 16/08/2006 10:44

did anyone mention acidopholus powder from health shop?
Great for digestive upsets and kicks the ass of probiotics

Gingerbear · 16/08/2006 10:51

agree with piffle - high dose probiotics work wonders. I order mine on line, but you can buy tablets from health shops.
Have also discovered that oats as well as wheat aggravate my IBS.

threelittlebabies · 16/08/2006 13:51

hope you feel better tomorrow notsoladyjess. I have the same thing, not had my test results back yet, but as it has been a few weeks, think they will prob show up normal. Mine is getting worse though, have almost been caught short a couple of times whilst out so hope I can get it sorted soon. Suspect it could be IBS though (mine that is) Good luck.
