Crohn's Colitis- DH in hospital

My DH was very bad with tummy pain last night and this morning the GP sent us in to get him assessed in hospital. I'm a bit confused because I thought he had Ulcerative Colitis but it seems it is now Crohn's.. I've been googling and found they often cannot be distinguished from one another to start with. He seems to have symptoms of bowel obstruction in the lower right abdomen- it's all bloated but just in that area. I'm hoping he doesn't need surgery as read it isn't a great idea in Crohn's due to the inflammatory nature and recurrance of the condition but I guess he might need it if it is blocked/ stricture.

Does anyone have experience of this please? It's come as a bit of a shock to me tbh, he's been managing it OK for over ten years with methotrexate and sometimes steroids but kind of thought it was under control. Until recently, when I knew it had been flaring up, he'd been to see the consultant and has a small bowel MRI, colonoscopy and bone density scan planned.

we have crohns in the family. My affected relations are doing really well on anti tnf drugs now as far as I know. I think the main aim will be establishing if there is a blockage for your dh, then getting the inflammation under control and a longer term plan in place. Thanks Brew I hope he feels better soon and someone who knows more about it comes along.

Thanks Denial, yes it is in the pipeline (a plan) and he is referred to gasto- investigations being booked..and then this. Hopefully the blockage resolves. Ironically I've also suffered them too so i know how awful it is.

Glad to hear your family are doing well and I'll look into those anti tnf drugs Smile

He's got pain/swelling in the terminal ileum by the sounds of it, a classic spot for Crohns to affect. I've had a bowel resection there (15 yrs ago) and am on Infliximab (anti TNF). Feel free to pm if you want any help/info from a Crohny.
