Anyone ever cracked a rib from coughing?

Got told by Dr today he thought I had done this. I have a chronic lung condition which has been getting worse since Sunday, on regular nebulisers and high dose steroids as well as whole host of usual meds for chest. He checked their wasn't a puncture in lung from a break - but all ok. Sore, swollen and tender in one area. And the muscles between ribs at the back are pulled.

Bones maybe weaker beacause been on so many high dose steroid courses and also on a low dose of daily steroids too.

Been given stronger pain meds as OTC ones weren't cutting it. trying to sleep propped up and use hot water bottle. Dr was very sympathetic and gave me laxatives too so don't strain from being constipated from pain killers! And he showed me how to support injured rib when cough, and said I wasn't to stop coughing and not to only take shallow breaths so infection doesn't build up.

Any other tips or things he has missed? OUCH OUCH OUCH!

Yes, i did it a few years ago; i'm asthmatic and get some pretty serious coughs. Horrific. I don't have any more hints for you unfortunately, other than just rest and wait for it to heal...

Oooh, I had pleurisy a few years ago and it felt like a cracked rib - gp said at first that I'd pulled intercostal muscles . 6 weeks later I was still coughing, in agony and had lost a stone. So I would say you need to keep an eye on it (they can hear the effusion as a crackling sound btw).

Yes yeowch, when I had pneumonia. And now I've sarcoidosis I'm dreading getting another cough.

You poor thing, it's absolutely shit and there's nowt can be done except to support it and keep popping the pills. Get better soon

Not me, but my mil did. :( My dh was complaining about having pulled a muscle in his chest, and my mil said she had cracked a rib coughing. Like you, she has a chronic lung condition (for 20 years) and has had steriods etc.
