Poor little DS has had a huge lump where his umbilicul (sp?) cord was for 10 weeks now. My health visitor has said "as long as you can push it in that is fine" but it seems to be getting bigger as he is getting older.

I understand as the stomach muscles mature it will reduce in size, has anyone has experience of this with their babies & how long did it take? I have also heard of an old wives tale about putting a coin on it and strapping it down, anyone done this?

Sounds like an umbilical hernia to me - ds1 had one. His got quite big - about the size of half a ping pong ball. If I remember correctly (he's 9 now, so I'm dredging my memory a bit) the GP said if it didn't correct by the age of 1, he 'might' need corrective surgery. I can't remember when it started to subside - but it did - he needed no treatment, and has a perfectly normal tummy button now.

Don't strap a coin to it - I'm sure that is, as you say, just an old wives' tale.

Hope that's reassuring - mention it to your GP if you're still concerned.

Oh and I wouldn't push it in either - I just left well alone
