Have you gone deaf in that ear? Could be a wax blockage. Olive oil over several days could soften and shift it. I am suffering with this myself - do get it sorted - mine started being really quite painful after a few days as the blockage shifted around.

Oh sorry, that was no help then

Hope someone else has some ideas, it sounds rotten if it is keeping you awake.

It is the blood in your carotid artery you can hear.

It is a normal occurence if it only happens once in a while.

If it is a constant problem, get your blood pressure checked out. Make sure you mention it to your gp.

I have had it from time to time caused by anxiety. Trying to get to sleep, focusing on any sound and I hear my heartbeat. Then it becomes a pulse in my ear and once there I can't get rid of it. Relaxation techniques to learn how to block the sound help.

Having said that, I would get it checked out to be honest. It could be the onset of tinnitus (constant noise in ear) or a sudden change in your blood pressure.

Oh god, this happened to me on holiday after swimming, I left it too long before going to the gp. it turned out to be a infected perforated eardrum, horrible feeling, the worst of it lasted around 3 weeks.

i have low blood pressure but I still hear my heart beat in my ear.....always have done since being a child. I remember freaking out over it when I was about 10, so I have been hearing 'blood whooshing' for over 20 yrs now!!!

Not a health problem as far as I know....thought everyone had it in all honesty. Especially if you lay a certain way in bed.

psychomum-you have put my mind at rest!

Same here I developed it about 3yrs ago. It is called pulsatile tinnitus. Basically you can here your pulse in your ear and various other noises. I have had MRI scan to rule something out called an acoustic neuroma (sp?) which is a harmless growth but they like to know it's existence to monitor it's growth.

Tiredness, anemia and stress will make it worse so try not to worry about it. You should get your BP checked and your iron levels.
