Was this a migraine?

I had a painful neck and lower had and shoulders yesterday evening, I get it every so often, I explain them to dh as a headache in my neck and that dip at the bottom of the head. Sometimes I then wake in night with horrendous headache, like actual pain in my head. I feel sick, worse when I move and usually paracetamol and water don't make much difference. Actually drinking water often makes me sick.

It happens maybe once a month, feel awful. But today it happened on a work day and in had to phone in sick. Couldn't move, turn light on. Then I zonked out for 10 hours, still feel a bit delicate.

Could this be migraine? Is it worth a gp visit?

sounds like the migraines I get but I also get the funny patterns in my eyes too. gp gave me tablets to take just as they are starting. though haven't worked so far n this migraine is on day 9

Thanks. I didn't have patterns in eyes. but felt really spaced out and like talking was really difficult

Yes go to the GP. Migraine can present in many different ways and can be very debilitating.
I get a fuzzy, dizzy feeling and then it turns into intense pain in one of my temples. I feel nauseated and exhausted.
The GP can prescribe the best meds for you. Sometimes that is preventative plus medication for when you get the migraine. I take Triptans. If it happens again before you get to see the doctor I would recommend migralieve which you can buy at the pharmacy. I found that very effective when I first started getting migraines. Sadly they do not work for me anymore.

triptan is what I have too. one just as its starting and one again 2 hours later if the first one hasn't worked.

so far though they are no good for me. I took first dose on thurs and then second dose a few hours after. I'm still headachy and feeling icky

Sounds definitely like a migraine. Get it checked out by the GP; there are good medications nowadays, though it's worth experimenting if what you get doesn't work right away. Triptans have transformed my life - they're very effective for me.

Whatever medicine you take, take it early. The longer you leave it the less effective it tends to be.

I had migraine for years and nearly every month. Usually lasted at least 2 days. About 20 years ago I spoke to my new Doctor. I was desperate. He recommended Imigran. It worked for me. When I had children the migraines mostly stopped but I had a massive headache in Peru two years ago! The Peruvian Doctor said it was altitude sickness and we has been at 13,000 feet so I believed him. Two days later I was worried as nothing was helping me get rid of the nausea and headache. Suddenly I realised this was actually a migraine and my DH went out to find some Imigran, in Cuzco. Unbelievably he found a pharmacy with a stock and within 3 hours I was having my first meal for 3 days and looking forward to seeing Machu Picchu instead of dreading it. I hope something works for you.

My sister has been getting the same migraines as my mum recently, no real pain just eye patterns.

Then I had one of the eye pattern ones last week. It was quite pretty but very annoying. Seems they are hereditary, but if be interested to hear about triggers. Poor light, can that be one?

Agree with Milly- imigran is actually a miracle. It's all that works for me. I can't take it at the moment as an pregnant and am fast remembering why it's a miracle.... Migraines with just a cold flannel on your head and paracetamol are the pits.

It sounds like one. I got migraines whilst I was pregnant, and occasionally get one now when I am stressed - headache, sickness, can't bear the light etc. I was prescribed Paramax that I could take whilst pg - it has paracetamol and codeine in it. I have to take it at the first sign of a migraine.

Yes, you can get migraine that originates in the cervical spine. I had one last month, not my typical migraine, so I phoned 111 to make sure I wasn't dying. After speaking to two health professionals they concluded that it was a migraine. Soon after speaking to the the pain came in my head as well.

I take Maxalt (rizatriptan) wafers - they're very good if you don't tend to absorb tablets once you're in a migraine.
