Cervical Erosion...scared..

Has anyone had this? Had some spotting after sex since starting (and then stopping) the pill.

After weeks of anxious googling I managed to get an appointment with my doctor and made a fool of myself by breaking down in hysterics in front of her. Anyway, once I had managed to calm myself down a bit she had a look at my cervix and said its erosion and I'm being referred to a gynecologist.

I'm still freaking out because apparently its indistinguishable from cervical cancer in its early stages (thanks Wikipedia...)

Any experiences?!

If u mean an ectropian? I have one iv also heard it called an erosion so think is the same thing. It's basically cells that should b inside on the outside of ur cervix these cells r more prone to bleeding as they're more vascular. Leave dr google alone and wait to c the gynae dr. There r lots of v harmless things that cause bleeding iv also had polyps removed about 8 yrs ago they've never come back and my smears r always clear.

Yes, I had one. It was nothing to worry about. Bled a bit for a while but just healed up on it's own, didn't need any treatment. Never affected smear tests.

I had an erosion in my 20's & was referred to gynae. From what I remember it was treated with something "painted (?)" Onto it - It felt like a smear test and I had some cramping afterwards but nothing major - I was back to be checked out for 2-3 more appointments and after that they recommended more frequent smears for a while (yearly) to keep an eye on it. Im now early 40's, have had no abnormal smears in over 10 years and am back onto the usual smear every 3 years.

Thank you for your replies, they've reassured me. I just can't seem to stop my anxiety about this and Google doesn't help yet I'm compulsively drawn to it. God knows how I'm going to get through the gynaecologist appointment, think I might have to ask my doc for some Valium, think she thinks I'm a bit unstable after today though!

I wonder if I can still have a smear test done considering I will probably bleed slightly if my cervix is touched?

Yes u can still have a smear done I have not long had one u may just spot a bit after my nurse tries to avoid it and get cells from my cervix rather than the erosion just means my smear takes a couple of seconds longer

I was referred to the hospital for a colposcopy last year after being told the exact same thing- erosion, which is exactly the same as ectropian.

Had silver nitrate (I think!) painted on and all was well. Like you I was terrified when I left the doctors, especially as I was given a leaflet on cancer services and being referred for a two week wait appointment. But it all worked out fine and if the same happened again I wouldn't be worried.

Try not to panic!

Gynaecologist will probably be used to people stressing about it and will reassure you. Do you have any idea how long until you get the appointment?

Thanks ladies, it's nice to 'talk' to actual people about it rather then just googling and focusing on the worst possible outcome.

I've no idea how long it will take to get the appointment, I got the impression it would not be seen as urgent though, I really should have asked but I wasn't thinking straight. I've got a smear test on Wednesday though so must think calming thoughts about that, god knows what the results will be...

No, I only found out because the person doing my smear test noticed it. Occasionally it'd spot slightly after, errm, bedroom activities but that was all.

Yes that's the same as me, not every time though. Oh well DH is away the next month, maybe the lack of sex (thank god)means the damn thing will spontaneously heal itself, can hope anyway!
