But I'm only 47, so why have I been offered a mammogram? Is it because I'm on HRT? There's no history AFAIK.

I suppose it's a bit like thinking about smear tests...worried about the discomfort, false positives, the tiny risk of a genuine positive...

I think I read somewhere that they are bringing the age down from 50 to 47.

hedwig2001 · 11/01/2014 14:20

I'm 48 and was called for my first mammogram in November.
They are gradually reducing the age limit and are randomly calling women in that age group, as they roll it out.

HerRoyalNotness · 11/01/2014 14:37

Starts at 40 in the states, had my first one yesterday. Was alright.

malteserzz · 11/01/2014 14:43

Great it's starting earlier I was 41 when diagnosed and that's by no means unusual

ILoveAFullFridge · 11/01/2014 18:00

What's it like, having a mammogram?

It's a tad undignified but not painful. Nurse hoiks your boob onto a plate and a second plate comes down on top so your boob is squeezed between the two. It's quite a firm pressure but not painful and over in seconds.

I'm 50 shortly in 2 months' time and I haven't had an invite for a Mammogram yet. My friend who lives in the next county, who will be 50 at the end of this month, had her 1st routine appointment last year. It clearly depends on where you live.

howmuchworse · 11/01/2014 21:38

They are trialling starting them at 47 in some areas. I've just received invite too. Leaflet that came with mine explained a bit about it, if you got one?

Bowlersarm · 11/01/2014 21:39

I was called in for a routine mammogram two years ago at 47. They are just expanding the age range.

somewheresomehow · 12/01/2014 15:54

I was 50 last September and had my first mammogram yesterday. The radiographer was lovely asked various questions ie any worries, on hrt etc arranged boobs on the machine, all done and dusted in no time at all and letter should come back in about 3 weeks or so.
My sil was so over the top stressing when she had hers done she couldnt even open the letter whereas I aint bothered at all.

Bowlersarm · 12/01/2014 15:56

OP - it's fine. A little uncomfortable when your breast is squashed into the machine, but all the nurses are so lovely. A million times better than a smear test, for me.

KumquatandCustard · 12/01/2014 22:40

I'm off for mine tomorrow - will be 50 in June :(

summertimeandthelivingiseasy · 12/01/2014 22:53

Where does everyone get these lovely radiographers from? Mine was awful!

Hope yours is better, OP!!

MrsHappyBee · 12/01/2014 23:01

I got offered one at work age 42, it showed up a lump, which was just a cyst and fluid was syringed out. Have had 2 more since then, the best thing about floppy boobs is that they can easily be squashed between the plates on the mammogram machine.
