Amoxicillin - how long till it kicks in?

Forgot to ask the GP and have been prescribed it for a hacking cough which has turned out to be a chest infection. Have been like this for two weeks (only just seen GP as thought it was simply a normal cough, therefore viral) and it's driving me mad (and the stress incontinence isn't helping )

If it's bacterial it should start to improve within about 48 hours. Chances are it's still viral though and could still last for ages.
