Giardiasis anyone?

Week 4 of horrible stomach bug that keeps coming and going. Intermittent diaorreah, nausea, headaches, tiredness, weakness, and terrible smelling shit and farts. They make the nausea worse. Also crippling stomach cramps all the time.

Finally went to docs today, and she suggested it was this. However I haven't got diaorreah all the time, but there is always a sense of urgency iykwim.

Is this how it presents? Am fanatical about hand washing, not travelled anywhere, drunk from a pond or licked anyone's bum. So where have I got it from. Sad

She took a sample and gave me metrinozadole. Have taken one so far, but feel so so shite....

Yes we had this en famille, which was fun Grin. You can catch it from unwashed fruit and veg, contaminated drinking water, all sorts. We hadn't been anywhere exciting either and it was pretty much exactly as you describe altho I don't remember bad cramps.

It's great your GP is on the ball. I guess if metronidazole works you have your answer. The test returns a lot of false negatives, or so we were told.

I remember at the start of the infection the diarrhoea was really bad and frequent, then bevoming more intermittent but lasting for weeks....

Sounds about right. Eggy burps anyone? DH gets it quite often (has immune system probs). The lab really needs 3 samples although they did find it in the one tiny one from DS when he had it.

Sounds like a protozoal infection to me. I had cryptosporidiosis not giardiasis but they're similar. I caught it on a farm as a student, told the Dr what I thought was wrong with me and he didn't believe me (I'm a vet, I was pretty sure...) Faecal sample showed it in the end. The inappetance lasted for ages, it was about 6 weeks before I ate a full sized meal.

Metronidazole should sort out giardia (but can make you feel pretty crappy in its own right), we see it frequently in small puppies.

Alas, no weight loss which would be the only good thing. Legs feel like water too
