Tooth cyst :( anyone had one?

Hi all,
Has anyone had one?
Just back from the dentist to check my progress on an " abscess " and it's not an abscess after all, but a cyst.
Not sure what type and hospital referall has been done :(

Cysts aren't too much to be worried about, if it's not been spotted before now then it's probably not huge. It. can be hard to say what sort until you look at it under a microscope.

What are you worried about precisely? If you say then I can offer more specific info otherwise it's all a bit generic.

I'm a bit worried its more than a cyst.
Would I know if it was a tumour rather than a cyst?
The dentist mentioned a biopsy and more x rays to be done at the dental dept at the hospital.
Also, the removal procedure looks pretty bad :( can it be done under sedation rather than being put out?
I just done really understand it, it came out of nowhere last weekend, the antibiotics prescribed for an " abscess " has brought it down but now it's harder and being called a cyst,

I had one left after an abscess. It keep getting infected, had route canal done. Was going to be referred to hospital to remove it but where it was it pressed in my sinuses and when I had a cold it burst. Had tooth removed now and it healed really quickly.

Cysts are generally harmless and biopsies can show what bacteria or cells formed it.

It's usually fairly easy to say it's a cyst rather than something else based on x rays and symptoms. They have different characteristics.
Is it around a normal tooth or one that has had lots of treatment?

You can certainly ask for sedation, it's impossible to say as some surgeons would want you under GA but you should voice your wishes for sure

Well the dentist didn't say it def wasn't anything serious just that he's pretty sure it's a cyst!

Did he show you the cyst on an xray? If it was round in shape and at the tip of a root then it will probably be a dentigerous cyst and the result of chronic irritation in this area due to low grade infection. These are by far the most common cyst and apart from becoming infected and causing pain are relatively harmless. They develop without causing symptoms and are usually found when having routine xrays. The fact that you have had symptoms of an abscess suggest that the lesion is actually a chronic abscess rather than a cyst. A large chronic abscess is often mistaken for a cyst.

on an xray a cyst tends to have a well defined edge, often a white line. Like willdo said, they're often associated with a root that has previously had an infection. A chronic abcess can have a similar appearance: well defined but without the white edge. Something cancerous is growing more rapidly and has fuzzy edges. The dentist will recognize the difference, especially if they know your history. TBH if it turns out to be a chronic abcess you may not need surgery, root canal treatment done well can solve it.

It was the dentengerious cyst the dentist was pointing at however seems quite unsure that it still could be a very deep infected abscess hence why I'm so worried and confused now that I have to wait all over Xmas / new year to get the hospital referral

Didn't really think about the email address, pretty panicked as you can probably tell so that didnt really enter my head :(

I have recently had two cysts removed, I was awake for both (but very dosed up) they biopsy as standard, the one I had removed a few weeks ago took double the time to remove as it looked quite bad in there, he was sure it was cancerous but thankfully it was all clear.
My only advice is to take ipod or some sort of music as the noise isn't pleasant (forgot ipod on last visit) it heals very quickly, The last one was at the front of my mouth so my upper lip was huge and black with bruising but all was fine within 5 days.
The relief now it is all over is fantastic as I was in agony for a few months.

Why did they think cancerous?

When they got in it has fed through the bone, it was all discoloured it was all fine though, he said such a tiny % are. Just saying biopsy doesn't mean they think it is cancerous, my first one was larger but hadn't grown in the same way as the second and there was no hint that he thought there was anything sinister but it was still biopsied.

And as far as I know (at least dental surgeries around here) They all refer for cyst removal it isn't done by a normal dentist, I was given option of GA on the first one but to be put to sleep is an extra 6 month wait here, this time I had a private consultant as I needed it done quickly in case my veneers need re doing as I am getting married and want it sorted before then.
Please try not to worry about it, if you have pain it will be a relief to get it all over with, I felt better straight away.

Did it feel very hard?
My brother is convinced it isn't a cyst at all, he had osteomylitis last year ( of the spine ) and mirrors me that a bone infection has very similar signs

No he isnt

My bone was hard as the cyst was within the bone not on top of it, it had grown so much it had no where else to grow so discoloured all the bone and yellow spots had appeared all over the gum in the area.
I would call dentist and raise your worries even if it is just to put your mind at ease
