Yes I was. (Hadn't had chickenpox- but blood test showed I was immune anyway)

Don't worry too much- the dodgy time for catching chickenpox when pregnant is at the end of pregnancy (As the newborn can get it).

My DS1 has just had it and DS2 is going down with it now and I'm 18 weeks pregnant. Haven't seen anything to suggest that it's dangerous to pregnant women per se.

My ds had it when I was about 15 weeks. I had had it as a child and so was immune. The blood test will tell you whther or not you are at risk and if you are they can give you a vaccine. The highest risk is in the first 6-8 weeks apparantely and then after 38 weeks as the baby can be born with it. The vaccine is highly effective and costs £500 a shot according to the Derby City General Hospital Ante natal ward. Good luck - I am sure you will be fine. The MW in charge told me that the majority of British adults have had Chicken pox even if only mildly

Dinosaur - get yourself checked if you have not had it as it can be dangerous to unborn children

Helsbels - NHS Direct says that pregnant women only need to check their immunity if they haven't had chickenpox themselves, or are unsure whether they had it - I know I definitely had it - presumably there is no need for me to contact a doctor?

dinosaur · 01/03/2004 13:49

Oops - sorry - rereading your email you presumably meant if I hadn't had chickenpox - I was thinking you meant if I hadn't had the vaccine...dur...soggy preggo brain not working too well today!

Helsbels · 01/03/2004 13:50

thats right Dinosaur - it is only if you have not had it or are not sure.If you've ha it there is no danger at all.

This is a good page, does say that there is a risk if mother contracts CP throughout pregnancy, but it's not just being exposed, it's actually coming down with CP that is the danger (although a tiny one).
