15% kidney function in 83yr old - serious?

DH's gran has failing kidneys. Her latest kidney function test was 15%. His family are quite relaxed about it saying it ha probably been caused by anaemia or a recent stint without heating making her feel cold.

MIL believes it will improve or the hospital would have admitted her mother by now.

I suppose what I want to know is - if it is caused by low iron or cold does that mean we can help by avoiding those things?

15% seems quite low but his family are all being so casual about it. Maybe I'm just too much of a worrier.
