Hi, I am sitting here second night of a very heavy head cold.I could not settle last night as I become very agitated when I cannot breathe through nose. This is my second cold this month and I am taking the usual cold flu tablets but they wear off quickly.I am fed up of this cold and the clogged up feeling .Any good ideas to ease the discomfort??Thanks in advance:)

Oh, you have my sympathy as I had the same last week.

I find that some good old fashioned Vicks rubbed on the chest helps with breathing. Either that or some Olbas Oil on a tissue at the side of your bed, closest to where you sleep.

I hope you feel better soon Thanks

I feel for you, every cold I get tends to be in my sinuses.

When I feel like this, i have a hot shower before bed - lots of steam to clear the passages - then Olbas oil on a tissue in the pillowcase under your head. I find those fizzy Vit c tablets can help too as first sign of a cold.

By the way, I never take cold or flu remedies as I tend to find they dry up the cold but block up the nose IYSWIM. I just take echinacea, vitamin c and maybe some paracetamol if I have a temperature or sore throat. Smile

Agree with showering. A bowl of hot water in your room too. And I've got some karvol that helps. Sleeping upright too - more pillows than usual.

Nasal sprays make my nose much worse so I avoid them.

Get a mug. Squeeze the juice of half a big lemon into it. Add big spoon of honey and a decent dollop of ground ginger (at least half a tsp). Or chilli powder, even. Then top up with hot water from the kettle but leave a couple of cm space to add a stiff measure of brandy or whisky. Drink fairly quickly (ideally in bed) before the alcohol evaporates Grin

The ginger should make your nose run, and help it clear a bit. And if not, well, it tastes nice.

I find massive doses of vitamin C taken to tolerance (Google it) generally kills any cold I get. be outside as much as possible,or window open if you can when inside (might not be possible if you are at work of course) I find that very helpful for keeping my breathing fairly clear.

Mucron also works well for me at keeping the congestion tolerable if I have to be inside with others.
