Ovarian cyst

I was admitted to hospital a couple of weeks ago for on-going problems since childbirth and whilst doing a scan they came across a cyst on my ovary. They have booked me in for a repeat scan in 4 weeks time. Why would this be? To ensure it isn't growing in size? How worried should I be? Has anyone experience cysts on tier ovaries before and what treatment was available?

Thanks

Try not to worry. TBH I'm surprised they are asking you to go back so soon. In younger women - under 50- they are really common and most usually go away on their own as part of your usual 'cycle'.

The usual plan is that if they are under 5cms across they are left alone unless they look suspicious- there are different types and if it's a simple cyst then they can usually tell.

I had a 3cms cyst that was monitored for nearly 2 years then it went away, but I am over 50. I had it scanned every 4 months to look for changes ( but that was privately) .

If it grows big, has a stalk that could twist and rupture and presses on other organs then they have to remove it.

Thanks for your help.

They were very vague about it and because it was just picked up by chance whilst I was in hospital for something else I didn't think too much about it. However when I was at the doctors last week, just as I was leaving she mentioned if I didn't get an appointment through, to go back and she would ensure I was referred for the repeat scan, which made me feel a bit uneasy and as though it could be more serious than I thought. I should have asked more about it but had a lot going on at the time.

I'm 26 so hoping they are just being cautious :)

Hi, I had an ovarian cyst was I was 29. Unfortunately it wasn't detected until it grew so large (10cm) that it started to get very painful so I lost my ovary. If it has been picked up by chance would definitely have your scan. Doesn't mean it's necessarily anything serious. Mine was caused by endometriosis.
