Toothache after filling?

I had a filling in one of my molars a few years ago but think it may have cracked because I was getting pain when eating on it, went to see a dentist and he wanted to put a gold filling in, had to do a cast of the hole in my tooth and went back 2 weeks ago to have the gold filling fitted.
It was fine for the first few days but I'm now getting pain on and off with it, it seems to be very sensitive and I've woken up most mornings with an ache
Is this normal or should I go back to the dentist?
I'm a bit wary to go back to that specific dentist as he was really rough and didn't seem to know what he was doing it seemed as if the dental nurse knew more than him, although whether dental nurse is training and he was testing her I don't know

DH had a filling a few years ago with the same pain afterwards. When it didn't settle he went back to the dentist who filed the filling down saying it was standing slightly proud of the tooth it self causing pressure on the nerve whenever he bit down. It was fine from then on.
