Hi. I know that loads of women have thrush at some point but it's not something I've experienced so please bear with me .

Recently I had antibiotics for a UTI. I still feel uncomfortbale after a wee but it's different plus now I feel increasingly itchy/sore around the front of my vulva. It's dawning on me that it's probably thrush, but I thought that that was more vaginal itching etc with yucky discharge??? I bought some thrush cream earlier but having got it home and read the leaflet it impliies that there's no point just using the cream without also using a pessary - do I need a pessary too, then??

Help, what with the UTI then this, I'm really fed up.........

You can get an anti fungal tablet off the pharmacy, ask for a generic one not a brand name.

No point paying extra just for pretty packaging.

If you go for a pessary remember you will have a chalky discharge after using it. Freaked me right out the first time I used one.

Thanks , Fluffy. In some ways I do like the idea of taking a tablet to just get rid of it, but I looked on the NHS website before I went to the pharmacy and thought that there was quite a risk of side effects? And that the tablet is just for persistent probs? Am probably wrong. Is the usual thing now to zap it with a tablet instead of creams and things?

It's pretty unpleasant, am fed up with being a woman I think!

Just take the tablet.. honestly it's fine. The canestan one works quicker but the cheaper one does the job in a few days.

Use the cream to ease the symptoms in the meantime. You can also smother a tampon in some if you want to coat the inside.. just put it in and pull it out but the pill does the job.

Fluffycloudland77 · 27/11/2013 22:15

Get zapping, side effects are not compulsory.

breatheslowly · 27/11/2013 22:15

Yup - get a pessary too. Or the tablet. You can order them online for way less than they cost over the counter and they arrive really quickly.

Thank you all, I knew there would be lots of knowledgeable souls on MN.

Am inclined to try the tablet, jusg want to get rid of it.

Am I right to assume that it is thrush, then???

I've got rid of it plenty of times just using the cream so you may be ok with that, especially if the itchiness isn't internal yet.

MidlandsMade · 27/11/2013 22:27

Ok thanks, will try the cream tonight and see how I am in the morning, maybe get a zapping tablet - how quickly do they work?

Thanks again everyone.

I'd say it probably is.

breatheslowly · 27/11/2013 22:34

It sounds like the symptoms I get with thrush, but I am no doctor.

Angelik · 27/11/2013 22:36

take the tablet and, if you're not too cold, sleep without any bottoms or knickers on as friction and heat will make it worse. as will tights and tight trousers. wear only cotton knickers. oh yes, don't use soap on your genitals. soap dries out everything, upsetting the bacterial balance and encourages thrush to thrive. I still don't use soap after having persistent thrush for over a year almost 20 years ago. It was dreadful so i know just how miserable it can make you.

to wash your genitals use a shower and point it towards your bottom so any discharge is washed away from the vagina.

hope it clears up quickly.

Antibiotics can be a classic cause of thrush- in fact because I suffer quite frequently with both thrush and UTIs I often get given a precautionary pessary at the same time as antibiotics.

I hope it clears soon; if not do go and see your gp to find out if anything else is going on.

ZenNudist · 02/12/2013 20:55

Given you've just taken antibiotics is just assume thrush. Dr can test but now you d started using the cream you could find if come back negative.

I find pill doesn't work for me but pessary does.
