Massive ulcers in dd1's mouth!

Only noticed them today as she had only just begun complaining about them,luckily we had dentists appointments this afternoon so she took a look at them and was quite shocked at the severity of them.
She prescribed some Difflam mouth spray and said to take her to the gp if no improvement in 2 days .
The dentist suggested it could be the beginning's of chicken pox but if it isn't then what the hell could cause such terrible ulcers?

Hand foot and mouth.My dd1 had it a few weeks ago and could hardly eat.Had some small spots on palms of hands and soles of feet that look a bit like blisters.Google pictures have good pics of it.

Does look just like dd's mouth/tongue!although she doesn't have spots elsewhere at the moment apart from 1 on her wrist and she has no fever .
I think it is probably this going by the look of her mouth and she has been complaining about head aches.
She must have picked it up at pre-school
It is her last day on friday ,she will be so upset if she cant go and she is supposed to be going to a party on saturday
Hope the rest of us and dd2 dont get it!
Should i take her to the gp to have it confirmed ?

I didnt get it nor did ds1 but dd2 and ds2 did but mildly and not in the mouth.So fingers crossed for you.My dd1 is 2 and she had no temp or headache. might still be worth doc confirming it.There is no treatment though.Anbesol liquid is good for sores in mouth.

Well the gp confirmed it and that was about it she didn't give me any info!I praise the wonders of the www.I didn't tell her that a Tortoise diagnosed it
Her mouth is still very sore and the blisters look so nasty ,she keeps screaming every so often as they are so sore
She cant eat anything really so im just giving her lots to drink.
The only positive thing is that last night (cos her mouth is so sore)she slept without her dummy for the 1st time ever !!!!!

So we are now encouraging her to go without with many promises and bribes.

Hello

This sounds like it could be Hand foot and mouth disease (caused by the coxsackie virus).

It's going round at the moment and DS had it a couple of weeks ago.

Perhaps you should take DD to the DR to get a second opinion? Other signs are little blisters on hands and feet and round the nappy area. However you don;t always get these.

DS also had a fever.

Id it is HFM disease then be careful as it is quite contagiuos and you could also get it - I did and it was not very nice!!

Hope your dd is feeling better soon.Glad you know for sure thats what it is.(lol at a tortoise diagnosing it!)
My dd is a thumb sucker and kept waking in the night cring cos she'd gone to suck her thumb and it hurt her mouth.
When my 6 year old ds got it school said he was fine to go to school! So he probably passed it round a bit more.

My ds also had HF&M a couple of weeks ago.

He had large ulcers on his tongue, throat and tonsils and hasn't used his dummy since then.

I was told by his nursery when I took him back (after getting the all clear from GP) that according to government guidelines they don't have to stay off nursery/school with HFM. Have to say I was completely shocked as ds was soo poorly and distressed, I won't wish it on anyone else's lo.

Thankfully, dd didn't get it.

Also, did you see that they are still contagious for a few weeks even after the spots & ulcers cleared up. Apparently, it can still be transmitted in the faeces.

Hope she gets better soon.

CADS my dd was really poorly with it but dd2 and ds2 were fine with it.They had no sores in the mouth which makes a big difference.Yes i did see that they are still contagious afterwards.Guess that why schools etc are fine with it too.

I cannot believe that they say it is ok for them to go to nursery or school obviously someone has done this and that is why dd is sat her sobbing and sobbing cos she feels so ill!
She still has been unable to eat anything and i am thinking of calling the gp because she now has a few blisters under her arm pits and on her groin and buttocks !

I read somewhere that adults arent as prone to catching it but i am worried now !
I just pray that dd2 wont get it.

dd2 had masses of spots in her nappy area.
Im afraid my ds went to school but he really was fine with it.Its normally very mild illness but when its in the mouth its obviously worse.Have you given any calpol? That helped my dd1 and she could eat a bit then.Custard went down well

Adults arn't so prone to it because they have normally had it as a child and its one of those things you only get once.(My gp said)

Tortoise - please don't think I was attacking you re your ds going to school. I think they all pick up bugs and if they had to stay home all the time they would never make it to high school.

Pelvicfloor - Poor dd, I can really sympathise with you. If it helps neither DH or I got it. Just make sure you wash your hands, etc. Sure you already know it is transmitted in faeces, salvia, coughing and sneezing. I'm sure you won't be putting your hands or toys in your mouth. and hopefully your dd isn't sneezing or coughing. DS syptoms started on Monday and by Sunday he was back to his old self and eating my out of house & home.

Unfortunately, some get it worse than others. It was really distressing for my ds. He is only 2.4 years and has delayed communication so didn't understand why I was syringing fluids, calpol, nurofen into his already painful mouth and throat as well as spraying them with difflam. One of the days I managed to get some frozen applesauce into him which helped keep him hydrated. Maybe, it will work with your dd, just make sure you avoid acidic fruits.

Have been typing this with ds climbing on and off my lap so I hope it makes sense.

Have tried calpol and it doesnt make any difference and she is reluctant to me giving her the difflam as she says that it stings so i dont want to make her worse if it really is.
we are trying to convince her that a macflurry is the way to go but we got her some ice cream yesterday and she had a spoonful and left it.

CADS-I didn't think you were attacking me!
My gp said its better if they do catch things and i agree.He even said he wishes schools would let children with chicken pox go to school so hopefully more children get it while young!

You can get it again - and so can kids because there are different strains of the HFM. GP says that it's quite common to get it again. There are about 6 different strains of the virus that cause the symptoms.

It's not very nice for adults - my mouth was killing me for about a week and I had loads of pimples on my hands and feet and they hurt when I walked. These symptoms only lasted a few days.

DS took about 2 weeks to get over it and I REALLY hope he does not get it again.
