Stomach pains when pregnant. Appendicitis?

I'm 6 1/2 weeks pregnant and have had a pain in the lower right side of my abdomen since Saturday. On Saturday the pain was severe, for the past few days it's been a dull ache. It hurts when I walk or push on it. At A&E they thought it was apendicitis but said removing my apendix would be a high risk to the baby. I'm hoping it could be something else. Anyone experienced similar pain? To complicate matters I live in the States but am due to move back to the UK in one week.

it's really hard to say on the internet

kitskat - I live in the states too, and have to say that we have found the doctors to be really cautious, and quite alarmist. You must feel really stressed with your move coming up. Did the ER tell you to come back if the pain got worse? If so and nothing eventful happens I would get yourself a gp as soon as you get to England, book in withhte midwife and discuss it from there.

The only other thing I would ask Is if you could be constipated? Because sharp stabbing pains and dull aches are something I have experienced when pregnant. When I was not very pregnant with my first I went home from work called the dr and was told to stay in bed for two days or so - it turned out to be constipation.

Hope things work out ok.
Where are you in the states and where are you going back to? we are returning to England next year

I'm half an hour north of New York City and moving back to Bournemouth. Have been here 7 years so It's going to be quite a shock moving back I think - although it's our choice. I'm hoping the pain is due to something digestive or cysts. Doctors can be quite alarmist here.

dw's cousin had an appendix out about half way through her pg ! Severe pain... went away a bit then came back big time... op within a day or so IIRC.

of course, it's hard to say, but i remember getting really bad pains that made me double up at the beginning of both my pregnancies.

I had dreadful pains in exactly the area you mention, but starting a little later than you. It turned out to be a fibroid on the outside of the uterus, twisting around on the stalk connecting it to the uterus. A scan would clarify immediately, though at this early stage it might have to be a transvaginal scan.

Don't you get fever and nausea and something different in your blood with appendicitis?

Did they do any tests or scans other than proddingyou and taking your history?

cupcakes · 12/07/2006 16:49

Did they scan you? Pain in your side at this stage in pg could be an eptopic. Don't want to alarm you but I'd definitely get a scan before you fly.

MrsJohnCusack · 12/07/2006 16:58

If ectopic is ruled out - and at this stage, it really does need to be checked FIRST IMO - then I agree it could actually be wind/constipation - that can be horribly painful - I am 7 weeks pregnant and have had stabbing pains, ectopic has been ruled out so I am assuming it's wind again - had it first time round and was sure it must be something worse, but it wasn't.
other possibility could be a cyst, or just general ligament stretching - that can also be suprising sore. But please get ectopic ruled out if it hasn't been already.

KitsKat · 12/07/2006 21:42

I've had scans and they ruled out ectopic. Also I had no other signs of appendicitis (fever, vomiting, blood count etc). I just came back from my obstetrician's and he seems to think it was a burst cyst (-glad I didn't let the hospital whip my appendix out then!). The pain is slowly subsiding.

Good about the ectopic KitsKat! I did suspect you must have had that ruled out

the cyst sounds quite likely. Glad the pain is getting better and hope you get a proper answer soon (and no more pain....)
