I have been taking anti biotic Azithromycin.

Now have truly severe stomach pains, mild nausea and mild diarrhea.

I would write this off as a bad case of side effects except that I have now read that it can cause c-diff, which I had about 18 months ago. The packet says to contact a doctor if you get stomach pain.

I am in the US, going to the go will make it all super medicakized, more appointments and prescriptions etc.

Anyone know anything about thus and whether I really need to go to the doctor?

Can you call your GP in the UK and discuss it over the phone? (Assuming you are normally UK-based.) I've had azithromycin before. It's a bastard and I felt really ill whilst taking it.

kickassangel · 18/11/2013 17:02

I'm US based.

Called the gp and spoke to a nurse. Probably a bug or food poisoning, but could be appendicitis. Waiting it out to see if the pain gets less otherwise I need an argent care clinic.

Throwing up every half hour as well now.

DS takes Azithromycin daily, I know a lot of the children in the clinic he goes to suffer with it, it's an unpleasant one, call your GP to be on the safe side.

I felt crap, too. Took a while to feel better.

Can you get a telephone consultation or talk to pharmacist? Guess only you know how ill you feel.

PacificDogwood · 18/11/2013 17:06

kissass, have you had Azithromycin before and tolerated it better?
It is well known to cause upset stomachs - mainly diarrhoea, but some some nausea and sometimes vomiting too.
Did you take a course of it or 1g (=4x250mg) as a single dose?

Stop taking it just now.
If you have any antiemetics, try and take one and see if it stays down.
If not, take nothing by mouth for a few hours and then try small sips of room temperature water.

If you get worse (particularly the pain), see your own doc.
Good luck.

How are you doing today?
Hopefully a bit better...

Hi love, I'm a veteran of US healthcare! Get well soon! Well done for getting it sorted out, appendixes are dodgy things!

cardamomginger · 20/11/2013 08:30

Bloody hell. Feel better! XX

Shock Well, there you go! Not the antibiotic's fault after all..

Hope you fell back to normal soon.
