Help! Bleeding from my ear, what is this?

I've just woken up from a light nap (I was feeling shattered, 35 weeks pregnant etc) when my right ear felt a bit wet so I put my little finger in it and it came out bright red so I got up and used 2-3 cotton buds to mop up the bleeding! It was bright red, fresh blood, no pain, no pimples or spots that I could feel and it appears to have stopped now.

It gave me a bit of a fright and I'm wondering what it could be? I've been on Dr Google and that's only served to scare me even more what with ear cancer and head injuries etc. The only thing with my ears is that I have to dry them out with cotton buds after I shower otherwise they get horribly itchy and flake a little bit and the last time I did that was yesterday morning, no bleeding or pain then and I don't put the cotton buds far in, just the tips of them.

Another thing that came up on Dr Google was ear bleeding + facial numbness = ear cancer and a few weeks ago I went to see the gp because the right side of my face went numb temporarily, same side as my bleeding ear, which he put down to a migraine (never had one, got no other symptoms) so as you can imagine I'm fearing the worst!

If anyone can shed some light I'd be most grateful.

No light here I'm afraid. Please call your local out of hours service for advice.

They would probably send me to a+e and I don't fancy that on a Saturday night tbh, I feel fine and would feel like I was making a fuss. I'll make an appointment to see my gp on Monday and just keep an eye on it till then. Thanks for replying.

But love, it could be extremely serious. A&E on a Saturday night isn't my idea of fun either but it could well be an emergency.

CajaDeLaMemoria · 16/11/2013 20:16

Yep, bleeding from the ear is a definite emergency.

Go now. Please. They won't sit you in there for hours - they'll want to check it out quickly. Call OOH now.

MrsSpencerReid · 16/11/2013 20:19

Can you get someone to check it isn't a scratch or something like that? I had a panic when DS's ear was bleeding, upon further inspection he had scratched in his sleep and made it bleed! Hope it is easily sorted for you Smile

You will be priority over thr drunken Saturday night louts plese please go to a&e!

NotAQueef · 16/11/2013 20:29

Have you had any pain in your ear, or behind it recently? I would call out of hours just for advice

candycoatedwaterdrops · 16/11/2013 20:31

Bleeding from the ear is an emergency, phone OOH for advice but failing that, A&E.

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 16/11/2013 20:36

No pain, no. DH has just had a good look around and he can see a little spot near the outside that bleeds when he dabs it with a bud so even though it doesn't hurt I think it must be this, thankfully. I am taking dd to see the gp on Monday anyway (also ear related) so will get him to take a peak then. Feel better now, panic over! Thank you for your replies!
