Fibroadenoma

Hi all,

I have had a lump in my boob which I previously had ultrasounded and biopsied (i think in Dec 2009 so four years ago) and they said it was a fibroadenoma and nothing to worry about. No advice given re follow up etc. It's gotten bigger over the past four years and is now maybe an inch in diameter - would say it was pea sized at the start. I had the GP check it about two years ago and he said nothing to worry about if it's getting bigger but just 'keep an eye on it' - didn't tell me anything specific though about coming back if it got bigger. Also said there was no need to get it removed.

Does anyone have experience of this? Is it something I should get looked at again now or should I just mentionto GP next time I'm in for something else? I'm not particularly worried about it but was wondering what the collective wisdom of mumset would think.

I'm 33 btw.

I had this when I was 17 - the lump went from nothing to golf ball sized in weeks so they removed it. Have you had a needle biopsy to check its definitely not dodgy?

Personally I'd be going back and pushing for further investigation and removal - it's not nice feeling a lump and worrying about it.

For me the op was a day case. I have a 10cm long scar that is just below the top of my bra cup, so it's not visible. I was really sore and bruised for a week or two, but its been fine since so I'd recommend getting the op done.

Thanks madness. I had the needle biopsy back when I first discovered it 4 years ago. It's gradually gotten bigger over the 4 years but is still quite small - nowhere near golfball size (yet!)

I haven't had it removed as I didn't want to have surgery if it wasn't necessary, it's just now I'm wondering if it could turn into something dodgy over time?

Was it a local or general anaesthetic you had when you had the op? Terrified of general anaesthetics!

I had a general but it was a short op and I was fine afterwards. The worst part was when before the op the surgeon had to draw the incisions on to my breast in black marker pen which looked terrifying - the actual scar was far less dramatic!

I'm sorry I've got no idea on the medical side of things. I assume if there was any risk of it turning dodgy the drs would have removed it immediate for you. I was just so conscious of it that removal was the right option for me.

Yeah of course if it was golf ball sized! Mine is only small wouldn't notice it unless you were looking. I'll keep an eye on it and if it gets any bigger I'll go to the doc. Otherwise I'll just ask him when I'm there the next time I'm sick.
