Go to A&E - yes or no?

Fell down stairs earlier (well sort of slipped down in my, aptly named, slippers). As I went I heard a 'snap' sound and then couldn't get up for a good 5 mins while I was in agony. After about 5 mins I was able to get up and can walk on it OK. It's swollen around the outside ankle bone adn it looks bruised.

I'm pretty sure I've not broken it or else I wouldn't be able to walk but JT is telling me I shoudl go to A&E where I'm pretty sure I'll just spend a crappy evening with a load of piss heads and come away with a tubigrip.

opinions please, whaddya think?

My DH got up and walked up 3 flights of stairs after a fall. He said he felt 'a bit bruised'.

Unfortunately it was a big fall.

Despite the lack of pain he had broken his ankle and his back and snapped his knee ligaments.

Errr, so that would be a vote for A&E then.

has she gone?

LIZS · 09/07/2006 21:55

Yuk, I've done that , not recently thank goodness (touch wood ). Memorable one on holiday in Italy , going down a step onto the lakeside and very loud crack as I turned it over, almost fainting, so much so the Italian lady next to me cried out ! Took a while to get over it and recovery doesn't improve each time.

If the swelling/pain doesn't subside after a day or two of Nurofen, ice/cold pack, arnica gel and resting it raised above your hip level , with gentle flexing to keep the joint mobile, then visit A nd E for an xray. Would n't go now unless you fancy waiting - sprains get very low priority.

Hope so twiglett!

Listen to your mother GDG.

Mother always knows best.

You have done exactly what I did at the end of June last year. I didn't go to A&E but I let it lie for months. Ended up going for physio but damage was done - still uncomfortable at times.

What I would do is make appointment for GP for physio referral ASAP. I think I would have been better off had I done that than leave it so long. If I had gone to A&E I might have had follow-up sooner like my BIL who did same thing.

Defo would not sit in A&E on a Saturday night. I did my anke in on a Friday BTW.

Remember to do RICE - Rest, Ice, Compression Elevate. Ice only for 10 mins at time. Also take Ibuprofen.

Prepare to be in agony for weeks......

Hmm, friend has just called and persuaded me to go to A&E (sorry mummy!) - just going to tell dh - he'll be well chuffed.

What swung it is dh can take me tonight as FIL is here - he goes tomorrow so if i decided to go then we would need to find babysitter!

Finished work - phew!

expatinscotland · 09/07/2006 22:12

Yes, mears is still busy building up those muscles! Those tiny ones you didn't know you had till you jacked up your legs.

Yeah, I found that out.

mears · 09/07/2006 22:22

God so it is.... A&E is bound to be quieter!

expatinscotland · 09/07/2006 22:23

A&E up here MUCH quieter than after a 'Gers v. Celtic match. Or Hibs v. Hearts if you're in Edinbraa

Gobbledigook · 09/07/2006 23:27

Told you I'd come back with a tubigrip!!

Anyway, feel better knowing it's not broken adn we were only there about an hour and no piss heads

Huzzah!
