Can you develop IBS suddenly? Pain, please help

I am suddenly experiencing terrible stomach and bowel pain having never suffered before.

I was tested for lactose intolerance a while back and have since avoided milk, which has irradicated the issue of constipation (sorry TMi) but suddenly I've had terrible pains, sometimes right next to my tummy button sometimes further down - literal stop and gasp pain.

Last night went out to the pub with some friends and had a chilli, and OMG had the worst ache/pains all night. I've never reacted to chilli before in fact I've always delighted myself with the knowledge I have a cast iron constitution. But not any more apparently?

So my question is am I being a hypochondriac or can IBS develop without warning?

Many thanks

Did you have to run to the loo within20mins of eating the chilli?
Im told i have ibs too for last10yrs thougj have only ever had an abdominal scan wjich was normal&nothong else to diagnose it
Iused to have to do that after every big meal so roasts chillis etc
it happens very rarely now thankfully!

No but it felt like I had to, iyswim? Then pain all night and very urgent loo trips the next morning (sorry TMI)

It's just so painful, is it a case of food avoidance, medication or what do you know? Many thanks.

I would go&see yr gp explain yr symptoms&ask for some tests to be done
It could be ibs or a number of other bowel probs
Ive been on movicol,fibrogel&spasminol tabs
Im now on none of those just the probiotics&omeprazole tabs which i take for gerd/acid reflux

All worth checking, I get that kind of pain (plus very upset gut for a few hours) if I eat gluten, so you could have developed an intolerance to something, but if the pain continues it is worth having it all checked out.

Oh ok, thanks HellyMelly much appreciated.
