Constipation advice

HidingCosItsPoo · 24/10/2013 14:58

I suffer quite badly from constipation. Used yo go nce every four or five days, now, through drinking lots of water and trying to up my fibre, I go most days.

Often, it is very hard to go. I have piles now, and it can be misery.

Other times I have the opposite, but constipation is the norm for me, checked out by medics etc, with no serious underlying issues.

So.

Last night I took a senakot, for gentle, predictable relief. Nothing this morning, but this afternoon - TMI - a nice big, easy to pass poo.

My question is, to give my poor beleaguered bottom a break is it okay to take senakot for the next few nights, so that I stay soft?

Thanks

yes you can.
But if you need something ongoing perhaps speak to a pharmacist as something like lactose or docusate may be a better idea.
plus more fruit fluids exercise etc

I would recommend Ortisan (senna fruit cubes) and also eating a pear each day. Good luck! (oh and LOTS of water/fluid to soften)

What a shit thread! Wink

I used that Lactose liquid for a long time when i had farmers. Life saver.

Can buy it over the counter & it actually tastes pretty good.

Milled linseed/flaxseed sprinkled on or in whatever food you don't mind giving a slightly dusty texture to. Muesli/cereal best. Plus prunes and prune juice.

2 of my 3 children had to use lactulose solution and certainly does the job. I was told to give daily or every other day depending and I don't think you need to suffer with constipation. At one time one of my children took movicol. That comes in a sachet and you just mix with water and also worked v well. In fact my Dr was happy to prescribe this long term as doesn't make your bowel like some medication does - but I think lactulose doesn't either. If I was you I would go to the drs and get it sorted cos it sounds miserable.

Here are some other ideas....

Have you tried fasting for a couple of days. It can help with severe constipation. Just topping up with fluids until you go naturally.

Glycerine suppositories soften any stools and provide some immediate elimination.

Lactolose - as suggested by Joanna. Very gentle action and encourages the bowel to hold onto a little water, so that stools remain soft,

Senocot Comfort - has added stool softener.

Manevac granules - come on prescription - contain psyillium husks, peppermint oil, senna etc. Help with transit and also bloating due to trapped gas.

Fybogel - fibre drink available without prescription.

Syrup of/Actual Figs or Prunes - high in fibre naturally.

Fibre supplements from a health food shop - many available.

Lepicol - Complete digestive formula available from health food stores. Kick starts you body's natural processes and gives you a clean start again.

Digestive enzyme formula - usually combination of digestive enzymes - which help with food digestion in the mouth, stomach and bowel so that less accumulates. Suggest getting advice from shops before buying.
