Coated spotty tongue!!!!!!!!!

Ds2 is 2 years old and has a white coating over his tongue and he has tiny white spots at the end. I've tried to brush it away but it is still there he is off his food but not his drink.
I took him to the docs today and he gave me no explanation for it he told me to leave it for a few weeks and if it hasn't gone away to bring him back. No disrepect to the doc but he looked like he had just come out of Secondary school!
But poor ds keeps saying "Ow" and pointing to his tongue, there is alot of dribble and he seems to be in discomfort.Told all this to the Quack but he told me to leave it. Any ideas what it could be and how to help him? any ideas would be appreciated thanks.

Sounds like thrush to me. Is there another GP at your practice that you can see?

DD just had thrush. One of the signs is apparently that the white coating can be rubbed/scraped off (as it is a fungus so sits on the skin rather than getting into it)- it was certainly true of DD. I would second the idea of going to another GP to check it out.

It does sound like thrush, if you cant get to another gp, speak to a pharmacist, I'm not sure but they may be able to give you something over the counter.

SherlockLGJ · 04/07/2006 18:33

You can buy this over the counter, it works a treat.

Thanks guys, I thought that it could be thrush I thought to check that it is thrush you could scrape off the coating with your finger nail, but this coating doesn't seem to come off at all, could it still be thrush?
Yes dp has just come home and is still not happy about the diagnosis so I think I'll make an emergency appointment tomorrow with our own doctor because the one we saw today wasn't our doctor.

Hi hows is he getting on? Has he got a rash at all cos my ds had this last month and a rash with it that turned out to be scarlet fever. Hope your little one doesnt have this tho!!

moosh · 06/07/2006 14:56

Thanks claireh11, I took him back to the doctors for a second opinion the very next morning as I really wasn't happy with the young doctors "leave it for 2 weeks" attitude.
This doc gave me antibiotic and thrush droplets as he thinks a throat infection triggered the thrush on his tongue. This is his 2nd day of his thrush droplets and his 1st day on his antibiotic so haven't seen much of an improvement yet, still not eating much but he has no temp anymore and he is back to his noisy perky self. He is pointing to his tongue still but not as often so hope to see yukky tongue disapear in the next few days .
There was an outbreak of Scarlet fever in a school not far from me but keeping fingers crossed that it isn't that!
