Diabetes?

MsNobodyAgain · 20/10/2013 19:04

I had gestational diabetes 9 years ago which could only be controlled by insulin.

I have been feeling ill and losing weight so I did a blood sugar test on an Accu-chek today and it was 21. From what I remember, this is high.

Could the diabetes have returned?

Yes. 21 is too high. You need to get to the GP pronto to have proper bloods done!

Thanks for replying.

What a faff if it is diabetes as I am already on a very restricted diet for another health problem.

I will ring the docs tomorrow.

With a reading of 21 I would make a call to your out of hours service or Nhs direct this evening. 21 is very high.

Thanks. NHS Direct told me to contact the doctor. I have rang this morning and they said I need a fasting blood test. Next available appointment is in 10 days! Then I have an appointment to get the results the first week in November.

It was 8.3 this morning before breakfast. I feel ok so I guess I will just have to wait.

21 mmol/l is v high. It's reassuring that you came down to 8.3 overnight but that's still too high for a fasting blood glucose. Keep an eye on your levels and if they are sustained highs of over 15 i'd go to out of hours.

I have type 1 and once my levels went high they went up and up very rapidly and it became life threatening. Have you any other symptoms bar the weight loss?

MsNobodyAgain · 21/10/2013 23:21

Weeing a lot, including in the night but I have been on diuretics until recently for another problem so I thought it was carried over from that.

I don't feel very thirsty but when I do, only fizzy pop will quench my thirst.

I feel tired but I am a single mum to 3 kids so not unusual.

I kind of wish I hadn't tested myself now. Ignorance is bliss and all that.

Oh, and my feet hurt! A strange kind of hypersensitive feeling. And it's worse in the morning. I go down the stairs one at a time because it is painful to stretch to go down stairs normally.

MsA 21 is very high but please don't panic. It does sound very much like diabetes symptoms ( I am type 2) Please tell me though you are not drinking fizzy drinks of the non diet type, if so please stop NOW. Try and keep away from sugary things, white bread and high card content food, until you get a proper test . Ignorance is not bliss btw as if you if have diabetes running high levels long term will cause you damage, ( but not short term until you get your GP appointment Smile

Agree with paddy. You need to get checked asap by GP . If it is Type 1 diabetes you can become very ill very quickly. If type 2 it still needs sorting.
Keep checking your blood glucose at various times of day but if you keep getting levels above 12 insist on being seen straightaway.
