First period after pregnancy

I had my little boy just under 6 weeks ago and I'm having my first period but it's so heavy!!
Is this normal?
My periods before were mainly very little loss but kind of thick, this one is a lot of liquid blood with lots of thick tiny dark bits in it and my womb area is quite sore feeling

Did anyone experience something similar?

My first period after pregnancy was very sore but I found it lighter than usual. I suppose it depends on the individual - I was still having lochia at 6 weeks and didn't get a period until DS was 14 months old.
