Chronic cough - suggestions for easing

I had a virus, which turned into a lung infection, which is now a horrid cough - the cough as been going on for nearly 8 weeks now and its horrible. Keeps me up at night, I'm exhausted. The coughing fits are horrendous and embarrassing - they start with an uncontrollable tickle that builds and gets worse and forces a very intensive cough, turns into retching and gagging too.

My doc has given me an inhaler as he believes my airways are likely aggravated, but not offered many other suggestions. I'm so tired, ribs hurt, and really just desperate for this to go away. Does anyone have any suggestions that might help to ease it, especially at night? I'm at my wits end!

I'm generally healthy and have never experienced anything like this before, but starting to really worry it's just never going to go away.

I should mention that I've tried all the usual cough syrups etc and they don't seem to do anything.

Could it be whooping cough? Sounds a bit like when I had it. Only a blood test can diagnose, though and it took three weeks.

Hi I had something for 4 weeks but had clarithromycin to get rid of it. You should have been offered an X-ray by now ( dr said standard to go if cough lasts longer than 3 weeks). I had a fever for that long too. Pulled a rib too - that is easing 4 weeks on. Go back to Drs.
