Back to A&E or wait until GP app on Monday?

My DH has had severe pain in his upper right arm and shoulder since last Friday. It is not swollen or red. He can't lift his arm without severe pain and he describes it as a constant stabbing pain, worse at night. He has been taking ibuprofen and paracetomol. At first it seemed to be a bad pulled muscle or trapped nerve but it got really bad yesterday and the arm felt numb so he went to A&E as it was getting worse. They looked at him and gave him co-codomol. Last night the pills did not seem to work and he is still in bad pain today. The pain is worse at night.

Should he wait it out and go with the pulled muscle/trapped nerve thing? He is hesitant to go back to A&E as it seemed like they thought he was wasting their time last night.

Call NHS direct explain and get a nurse to make the decision hope this helps. For not ignore it op and don't worry about feeling you wasted a & e time. Better to be safe than sorry!

He called NHS direct yesterday and they said go to A&E to get checked, but A&E were very dismissive when he was seen.

Call GP, and out of hours if he can't get an appointment with GP. He sounds like he needs more painkillers at least.

Agree, OOH GP should be able to provide pain relief until Monday. Or refer if they think it needs hospital.

Call your GP today, if an acute urgent problem will always be seen on the day though you may have to wait a while...

Thanks everyone, will try and get him a GP appointment today.

I had exactly the same thing a couple of months ago. Couldn't lift my arm at all, couldn't even sit up in bed unaided.

I had bursitis - although hospital initially thought it was dislocated.

He needs stronger painkillers and possibly an X-ray to rule out dislocation. The dr at the hospital told me you can do it without realising.

Good luck, hope he feels better soon.
