NHS Dentist - tips on finding a 'good' one?

I have a very good dentist but he is no longer NHS. His prices are very fair but we don't have much money and I am entitled to free dental care on the NHS so it would be very useful to be with an NHS dentist.

The only thing is, I've been with the same dentist my whole life. I haven't been able to get a word of mouth recommendation whatsoever - almost everyone I know sees a private dentist, and the few who have seen NHS dentists have only shared negative stories. The thing is, I'm pretty sure there must be plenty of good NHS dentists! However the lack of recommendations makes me feel a little bit nervous as I don't really know what I'm looking for to make me more at ease.

I've looked on the NHS search site but there aren't a lot of reviews and a number of those that are there are negative, but I expect that as people may be more inclined to complain about the service than leave positive reviews.

it will be hard to get recommendations from those who are fee-paying - very few dentists now take on fee-paying patients (which is probably why all your friends have gone private) so there is little choice.

choose the nearest one, if you don't like it, change!
