Abnormal smear really worried

Hi, I have had an abnormal smear test result today with high grade abnormalities. I have been referred for a colposcopy. How worried should i be about this. my last smear 4 years ago was normal . before that i had had borderline result and had a 6 monthly programme for a while. I feel sick - have terrible health anxiety anyway and am unable to keep myself calm.

I know this is easy for me to say but please try to stay calm. Once you have been for the colposcopy they may treat you there and then or take a biopsy but you will have a much clearer idea of the situation.

Cell changes take a long time to grow so as you had a clear smear 4 years ago this should give you a bit of comfort.

Have they said how long it will be for your colposcopy as mine was urgent so had to be within 2 weeks and the days dragged and it was horrendous at the time but now a year on things are back to normal and I have had a clear smear since and another due in October so please don't panic too much.

Echo that. My sister had an abnormal smear followed by colposcopy, cone biopsy (or some other treatment, not sure). She's fine now, just has to have more regular smears. I had the same years ago.
They are VERY hot on this, so you should be reassured that they are on the case. Easy for me to say I know, but the system works so try to stay calm.

Thank you- I don't know yet how long it will be. Waiting for a letter and then I can call and book. Really wasn't expecting any problem so it's a shock. Thanks again for your message.
