Gallbladder open surgery

Hi, I'm due to have my gallbladder out in a couple of weeks and due to previous surgeries they have said that is unlikely they can do it the keyhole way.

Does anyone know how I will be feeling afterwards as DH is wanting to go away for the weekend. Operation is on a Tuesday so that will be 5 days after.

We have 4dc ages from 6 to 15 and I'm worried I will not feel up to looking after them.

I've only got 1 DC, and had my gallbladder out by keyhole, and there is NO WAY I'd be happy with DH going away after 5 days if I were you based on my experience. I wasn't physically able to look after DS for at least 1 week, and took it easy after that too.

Open surgery is major surgery, and will have a recovery time similar to a CS I'd have thought.

There's not a snowball's chance in hell that you'll be up to looking after 4 DC 5 days later...

Thanks NoWayNoHow, I was thinking I probably wouldn't feel up to much

You may not even be home!

SIL had same a couple of years ago and was weak and fragile for several weeks. Just tell your DH no. He can spend the weekend looking after you and your kids. Probably the next one, too!

If you rest and recover quietly for at least the first couple of weeks it will pay off in the end. May be no driving either for some weeks.

All in all a big fat NO!

Ho ho, he's having a laugh.

3-5 days inpatient is average, but can be longer if any issues.

Around 6 weeks to recover fully from open surgery.

No heavy working/lifting for a few weeks, no driving for at least 2-3 weeks.

Thank you for your your answers. He is NOT going now Smile

I had mine out by keyhole surgery earlier this year and had help for 10 days post op. good luck with the operation.

Glad to hear it Lori.
DH had his out earlier this year by keyhole surgery. He is pretty fit, so made a quick recovery, . He had day surgery, was walking around within 2 hrs, looked like nothing had happened to him after 2 days - in fact the day after the op, he came with me to pick DD up from respite and the carers asked if his op had been cancelled as they couldn't believe he had just had surgery from looking at him. His mother was comparing how things were when she had hers out years before. She had open surgery, was in hospital for 2 weeks and had 3 months off work and was in considerable pain.
You are having major surgery, you will need looking after and even if you don't, you won't be up to looking after children.
Hope all goes well.
