Long term digestive problem or a bug? Can you offer any advice?

My DS is 22 and has Downs. He is a healthy chap but, ever since he was about 5 or 6, has suffered from occasional bouts of IBS like symptoms. He goes grey, breaks out in a sweat and tells me he has a tummy ache, then he goes to the loo as quickly as he can, has a massive evacuation then feels massively better. Sometimes, when he presses his tummy down he feels the urge to be sick and brings up a bit of sick, usually a bit of something he's recently eaten but not the whole meal. This might happen a couple of times a week, then nothing for a few months, then it starts up again.

Nothing seems to trigger it off - we kept a food diary for a year. There's no pattern to it.

We had a holiday two weeks ago and he had an episode one dinner time but felt much better an hour later. Since then he's not been right. He's been going to the loo about 3 times a day accompanied by the tummy ache and the being sick. In between each episode he feels as right as rain.

DH thinks it might be a bug but, if it was, DS would surely be feeling really ill and using the toilet and being sick much more frequently. Just in case, I have been disinfecting and washing like a mad thing.

I think it's more to do with his previous IBS like symptoms only worse. I am going to get him to the doctors in the morning and try to get to the bottom of it. I'm hoping the doctor will ask for a stool sample and maybe refer DS to the hospital.

At the back of my mind though is the possibility it could be something worse, exacerbated by the fact that first I had treatment for breast cancer in 2011 and this year DH has had part of his kidney removed for kidney cancer. I am trying to keep calm and not think about it happening to our family a third time.

Any ideas what this could be?

Your poor ds. I have IBS and it sounds very similar to what happens to me. Has anything changed in his life recently? I find stress really aggravates my IBS. I have recently started taking a probiotic called Optibac Bowel Calm which has really helped me.
I hope you find some answers for your son. I have to say, you sound like an amazing mum Smile
