Hi....I was on this antibiotic for a week for a dry socket following a tooth extraction ...not sure it helped but made me feel completely wiped out after day 3. Managed to keep it down by eating loads of porridge! I have been off it 4 days now and still feel weak and tired out and a bit sick. Just wonderd if anybody else had been on it and felt the same after they finished the course???? It has also made me feel quite low. Don't fancy taking it again! Thanks

Metronidazole can be horrendous. It turned my gullet into a fiery furnace that took weeks (and a month of omeprazole to recover from). Not to mention it has left my gullet sensitive now to anything faintly acidic.
Any drug that requires another drug to recover from is to be avoided at all costs. I would never touch it again.

I think I had it for helicobacter, it was like a lead weight in my stomach.

I did finish the course though, and got rid of the h.pylori but it was not pleasant I recall.

Dentists in our area always prescribe that as a first choice. I and SIL suffered terrible gastro-intestinal problems, and I carried on for 5 days after the course was finished feeling see-sick and losing weight. I lost half a stone in 10 days and looked 20 years olderAngry.
Metronidazole was immediately put on my allergic list, and refused it ever since.!

I had it for parasitic gut infections - absolutely awful stuff. Made my pee go brown and I lost my balance - couldn't walk straight for a week :). Afterwards had a pretty sensitive stomach for a while - which was ironic....

It's horrible stuff.

My doctor told me to eat all the time when I was on it, essentially never letting my stomach become empty. He said it speeds up your digestion so you need to keep topping it up. It did help.

Things like natural yogurt etc can help as well.

Metronidazole is a good antibiotic for killing anaerobic bacteria, ie those that grow without oxygen, such as the ones that live in the gums, gut etc.

Like many antibiotics it can also kill healthy gut bacteria, so some people find a week or two of a probiotic helpful. The jury is out on the clinical evidence but anecdotally I have had patients tell me they were much better for using a probiotic after a course of metronidazole.
