Any idea why nail would be peeling off?

My finger nails have been in a terrible condition for about a year, ridges running vertically up each nail, constantly braking and splitting unable to grow them at all. Also Toenails so brittle they almost shatter if knocked. A few weeks ago I noticed my thumb cuticle seemed to be developing another cuticle above it (2 white half moons) then a layer started lifting from the cuticle up, I've now lost about a quarter of the nail with what looks like pink nail underneath there is no pain. The whiteness extends half way up my nail though and I think it will keep coming away to this point. I haven't banged it or hurt it in any way and I'm not really sure what will happen now or whether another layer will grow from the cuticle, any ideas?

You need to be seen by a doctor.
