Prednisolone effects?

justkeepplodding · 14/08/2013 18:20

I was diagnosed with a severe chest infection yesterday afternoon and given amoxicillin and Prednisolone.

Got 5mg tablets and was told to take 6 every morning for next 6 days. Took first dose this morning.

Am now feeling really strange. Aching all over, especially legs and arms. Can't explain how my arms feel really but kind of tingly and they feel hard when I touch (if that makes any sense). Not painful as such, but not normal I suppose. Uncomfortable is the right word I suppose.

I've been on Prednisolone before for 6 days and felt fine. I just wondered if anyone here has any experience of being on these tablets as couldn't really see anything about short term use on Internet.

Thanks

Can't comment personally, but my ds used to take Prednisolone for a kidney condition - 10 tablets a day sometimes for weeks at a time. His main side effect was that he would usually have a very sleepless night soon after the start of the course. Not much help, but it was a very large dose as he was 6 the first time. Doesn't seem to have had any lasting effects.

I am on prednisolone for an ulcerative colitis flare. I started at 60mg (12 tablets) for 2 weeks, tapering down over the last 6 weeks or so to 15mg currently, hoping to be off it in a few months' time.

Pred is a double-edged sword (have been on it quite a few times). It really helps with so many medical conditions (I would now be dead/ have no bowel and be blind without it) but the side effects are awful.

Everything you describe is down to the pred. At higher doses I get palpitations, faintness, joint pains, insomnia, indigestion, shaking, numbness, tingling, extreme hunger, moon face and weight gain. Things start getting a bit better at 20mg and by 10mg the side effects start to disappear.

If you're only on it for 6 days you should avoid some of the symptoms I have listed: it takes just over a week for me to see moon face and get the increased appetite, but I do get the tingling, palpitations and joint pain straight away (although I have always started on 40 or 60mg).

I hope the steroids are starting to work for you and you feel better soon Flowers

Thank you very much for your info.

Its so difficult to try and explain how my arms/legs are feeling lol. Haven't been able to sleep either even though I feel shattered so that makes sense now. Combine that with the struggling to breathe and glands coming up I'm guessing I'm in for a sleeplessness night Envy oh well crap tv it is!!

Initial insomnia is common on pred. Apparently it's a drug which causea swelling in the stomach and face due to the drug causing water retention so maybe that is causing the uncomfortable feeling in the arms/legs?

Try and take them 1st thing in the morning helps with not being able to sleep. I got very bad kness when I was on them but I was on them for 4 years due to mix up between doctors. But saying that my health was loads better when I was on them do catch 22 situation. Hope you feel better soon x

ReindeerBollocks · 14/08/2013 21:25

Oh yes the increased appetite. When DH first went on pred he was eating two dinners and constantly snacking, which doesn't help the pot belly he got from the drugs anyway Grin

justkeepplodding · 14/08/2013 21:30

An excuse to forget the diet then Grin

These side effects do sound like a barrel of laughs lol.

I was thinking that when I touched my arms they felt hard as if they were swollen.....I dont know though, just feel so strange.

Who needs Google when there is Mumsnet.
