Right sided back pain

I have low back pain on my right side, it radiates to my groin and down my leg. I have no urinary symptoms, I have been taking ibuprofen and paracetamol, these do not take the pain away but do help as I then feel a dull ache, a hot water bottle eases the pain.

Has anyone any suggestions as to what could be the cause ? Thanks.

Sounds like sciatica. That can feel almost 'periody' and can definitely radiate into groin and down front or back of the leg on the side of the pain.

I get this due to hypermobile joints - if I lean too far forward, sometimes I hear a clunk and I get the symptoms you are describing. Sometimes it starts up after a night in a different bed or after housework that involves bending forwards like mopping or hoovering. I also find I am more prone to it when my period is due, maybe due to laxness in the muscles or something at that time.

Can you think of any reason for yours?

Kidney/uti pain tends to be sort of mid rather than low pain in my experience and feels different (more throbby) and as you say there are usually other symtpoms after a few hours of it such as peeing a lot, stinging, shivers etc.

Thanks for your help, wonder if it is sciatica, cannot think of anything to cause it, it literally came on suddenly as I was sitting.

The pain is a constant dull ache and then occasionally a sharp pain, a hot water bottle eases it.

It can sometimes be set off by something ridiculous such as sneezing! Sometimes you can get a muscle that goes into spasm and that will give you a few days of pain ranging from mild to flipping agony.

You could try alternating ice and heat - 15 mins of each every hour or so and regular ibuprofen for a few days and see how it goes. If you start to feel unwell, have any bladder symptoms or the pain gets worse or starts to feel throbby, then GP. Hope it goes off soon. Back pain is soooo miserable.
